The SHIVER service encompasses many aspects relating to Sexual Health and amongst these is various Open College Network (OCN) accredited training courses available free of charge to volunteers, statutory and local agency staff.

Training courses can take place at your own place of work, dependant upon numbers or delegates can book on to a rolling programme that offers flexible times and dates here at SHIVERS own premises.

Training timetables on occasion are subject to change.

Sexual Health training is a rolling programme and takes place over 6 half day sessions.  Training is tutor led with group participation in the form of interactive exercises and written examples produced by delegates.

Course Outline

Sexual Health Awareness

AIM’S & OBJECTIVES

By the end of the session, delegates will:

  1. Increase their knowledge of the most common STI’s
  2. Be able to explain the modes of transmission of STI’s
  3. Identify common social myths relating to transmission.
  4. Identify risk factors associated with various sexual activities in relation to specific STI’s
  5. Outline key areas where discrimination can occur re: gender, age, sexuality, race, faith, and disability and HIV status.
  6. Outline how inequality and discrimination issues could be overcome
  7. Outline the main components of a healthy sexual relationship.
  8. Be able to explain the modes of transmission of the main BBV’s (HIV, HBV & HCV)
  9. Identify common social myths relating to transmission.
  10. List various sexual activities.
  11. Identify risk factors associated with various sexual activities in relation to BBV’s
  12. Increase their knowledge of the primary Blood Bourne Viruses

 

Understanding Sexuality

AIM’S & OBJECTIVES

By the end of the session, delegates will:

  1. Delegates will understand the construct of personal values and beliefs around sexual orientation issues
  2. Evaluate personal beliefs and challenge self and others relating to sexuality.
  3. Reflect on how personal beliefs impact on working practices.
  4. Be able to discuss and give examples of the construct of homophobia and hetero sexism.
  5. Be able to evaluate the construct of sexuality, how this construct is reflected and used in society e.g.: images and labels

Sexual Health Services & Legislation

AIM’S & OBJECTIVES

By the end of the session, delegates will:

  1. List a range of non clinical sexual health services in an identified area
  2. List a range of clinical sexual health services in an identified area.
  3. Review appropriateness of services in relation to their target groups.
  4. Review government NHS targets for sexual health services.
  5. Outline the legal duties of NHS services.
  6. Review appropriateness of local NHS sexual health targets and their relationship with national targets.

 

Blood Borne Virus Training Toolkit – Train the Trainer Format

AIM’S & OBJECTIVES

This format allows the cascade of all of the above objectives to be achieved via manager/supervisor delivery to their own staff upon completion of this course.

Assertiveness Training for Men who Identify as Gay

AIM’S & OBJECTIVES

By the end of the session, delegates will:

  1. Be able to discuss, explore and consider the values of assertive behaviour.
  2. Attain skills of assertiveness through facilitation of practical group working methods.
  3. Be able to develop and practice assertiveness skills in communicating clearly, concisely, honestly and directly within a safe environment.
  4. Be able to assert more control of their lives and in making decisions that do not involve them giving away their won rights or trampling on those of other people.
  5. Gain greater clarity surrounding the rights that they are entitled to, the choices available to them, and the skills and confidence to act upon those rights and choices.
  6. Be able to implement a personal assertiveness action plan with appropriate support.
  7. Build a healthy sense of their own self esteem.
