Welcome to the training school.


The provision of training internally and externally has been a core element of Drugline-Lancashire service delivery since its inception in 1986. This has embraced key areas of development: services that have a training element as part of their provision, commitment to staff and volunteer development, bespoke training roles covering sexual health and substance misuse and training partnerships:

The Drugline- Lancashire dedicated Training School began in 2004 with the awarding of a Big Lottery bid in Blackpool and comparable funding in Lancashire to consolidate substance misuse volunteer training and their preparation for employment to become the substance workers of tomorrow. Within this to establish the service as NOCN compliant and develop and offer relevant accredited learning. This allowed the service to build up a portfolio of courses for volunteers, staff and more laterally partner agencies. With the end of lottery funds in 2007 the independent Training School was established , with suitably qualified trainers, as self financing and embracing the opportunities for accredited and capacity building opportunities through offering courses at level 1, 2 and 3 OCN and drawing from the range of service experience with an annual program and further offering its services to the local commissioning bodies .This highlighted with recent support to First Aid and Overdose training, Dual Diagnosis and related issues training, Naloxone pilot training and Peer education Project training.

Under the SHIVER sexual health services the agency was awarded a tender by Blackpool NHS to deliver Sexual Health Training for non clinical sexual health, sexuality issues in clinical settings, sexual health in non-clinical community settings, assertiveness training for high-risk groups, BBV training and Training the Trainers. Training accredited to level 2 NOCN accreditation and supported with published packs. This working also being able to be embraced by the SHIVER services, staff, volunteers and greater substance misuse focussed staff and volunteers .

In partnership with Manchester based Lesbian and Gay Foundation the SHIVER Drugline-Lancashire dedicated sexual health services in Blackpool are trained to national DOH standards to deliver over two year a dedicated training service ‘ Caring with Confidence’ for all carers across greater Lancashire with a specific target for LGBT carers.

The substance misuse service also recently being awarded the IBA training for Blackpool, allowing greater opportunity across the town of increased adult and younger people services, businesses and community organizations to be best equipped to identify and offer brief advice to both drug and alcohol users in a motivated manner.

Services that include a training element:
  • Open Access services commitment to community and tier 1 issue and service awareness and access routes to support Models of Care
  • Open Access Volunteer led services induction , ongoing and accredited learning at level 2 and 3 in substance use through NOCN to ensure robust volunteer led working and committing to develop the workforce of tomorrow.
  • Open Access led community and service user inclusion including the application of an accredited level 1 NOCN accredited course for affected community members and substance misuse peer learners.
  • Dedicated younger peoples and their supporting services training; combining issue and service awareness. The former offered directly to younger people in all settings and their workers in both Lancashire and Blackpool until younger peoples services re configuration in 2006 and 2007 respectively. The services unique and continued expertise to meet the Hidden Harm agenda since the launch of its dedicated service in 1997 allowing continued ability to share learning and practice, most recently evident in its regional training of foster carers.
  • The dedicated Family Support Service In Blackpool offering targeted responses for drugs and alcohol awareness and service awareness for carers and those working with families and carers.
  • The stimulant treatment services, with recognition to the specialist nature of the issue and responses and the service’s National Crack Pilot status, offering dedicated training in Crack cocaine, Methamphetamine, Drug awareness (2 versions – one for 16-19 years and one adult), Stimulants (best practice working). Brief Interventions, Harm Reduction, Amphetamine work with families /carers ,Relapse prevention training, and Cocaethylene awareness training.
  • The Blackpool Needle Exchange, Harm Reduction and SIPED service offering dedicated issue, capacity building and service awareness including dedicated accredited learning opportunities to pharmacists and other allied professionals.
  • Across both Lancashire and Blackpool areas of operation both staff and volunteers have embraced and applied Health Training the Trainers opportunities (to a level 2 and 3 standing).
  • To meet the services commitment to Navajo and greater Lancashire commitment to sexuality awareness and anti homophobic practice both sites representatives have gained and applied accredited OCN level 2 at Training the Trainer level.
  • The Dance Drug Safety venue outreach service in Blackpool offering dedicated venue training to owners and workers to ensure robust application of the Safer Nightlife agenda from substances misuse awareness, policy application and needle disposal.
